What It’s Like to Work in Social Media Management
Last Update: 30 March 2022
I work as a social media management. My main job is to create and implement campaigns for my clients, but in order to do that, I have to have a good understanding of the social media landscape. That means knowing what works and what doesn’t, which is why I also spend a lot of time on research—learning about the latest trends, details about how influential people use social media, and more. I’m also responsible for scheduling posts, responding to comments/requests, and promoting content on social media.
I don’t come from a traditional background in marketing or communications—I studied agricultural in college and transitioning into social media management. It’s been really fun working with clients, helping them put together content they can use on their own channels (and seeing their engagement!), as well as learning all sorts of new things about digital marketing!
When I started here, I thought it was going to be a smooth ride. But I was in for a surprise! First of all, I had no idea how different it would be from working at an agency. Sure, there are all sorts of different projects, but it’s not as straightforward as an agency would be. I started learning how to think like a client and develop creative ideas that you might actually want to use! I also got a good feel for some projects that are currently in progress and how everyone on the team is working together to create something awesome. It’s definitely not as straightforward as an agency would be, but it’s all part of learning what goes into creating content for different channels and platforms. In fact, here are some of the things I’ll be doing on your first day: learning how to think like a client, developing unique and creative ideas, coordinating ideas with team, and keeping track of multiple projects. Working at agency will transform me into an incredibly well-organized, time-management machine.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably feeling pretty good about yourself right now. You’ve got some brass ones, and that’s exactly what it’s going to take to succeed in this industry. Successful won’t happen overnight. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s going to take time and dedication before your skills are up to snuff, but if you have patience and stick with it, I can promise that it will be worth it.
